Domestication
Recent examination of the genetic evidence by Carles Vila and others confirms that the progenitor of the domestic dog is the wolf (Canis lupus). The suggested date of their domestication is about 100,000 BP. While accepting the wolf as the ancestor, paleontologists and archaeologists believe domestication much later. A reconstruction by a joint team of researchers from China and Sweden postulates that humans may have domesticated dogs from wolves as recently as 15,000 years ago. They found that, while most dogs share a common gene pool, genetic diversity is highest in East Asia, suggesting dogs have been domesticated there the longest. Genetic research suggests that all domestic dogs worldwide may have originated from possibly three female wolves.
The dog, along with the pig, were the earliest animals domesticated in China. Remains of both animals have been found in the oldest Neolithic settlements of the Yangshao (circa 4000 BC) and Hemudu (circa 5000 BC) cultures. Canine remains similar to the Dingo have been found in some early graves excavated in northern China.
Tests on neolothic dog bones show similarities between dogs from this era and modern-day Japanese dogs, especially the shiba inu.
Dogs as ceremonial sacrifice
According to Bruno Schindler, the origin of using dogs as sacrificial animals dates back to a primitive cult in honour of a dog-shaped god of vegetation whose worship later became amalgamated with that of Shang Di, the regining deity of the Shang pantheon.
Systematic excavation of Shang tombs around Anyang since 1928 have revealed a large number of animal and human sacrifices. There was hardly a tomb or a building consecrated without the sacrifice of a dog. At one site, Xiaotong, bones of a total number of 825 human victims, 15 horses, 10 oxen, 18 sheep and 35 dogs were unearthed. Dogs were usually buried wrapped in reed mats and sometimes in lacquer coffins. Small bells with clappers, called ling (?) have sometimes been found at the necks of dogs or horses. The fact that alone among domestic animals dogs and horses were buried demonstrates the importance of these two animals to ancient Chinese society. It's reflected in an idiom passed down to modern times: "to serve like a dog or a horse." (????).
Shang oracle bones mention questions concerning the whereabouts of lost dogs. They also refer to the ning (?) rite during which a dog was dismembered to placate the four winds or honour the four directions. This sacrifice was carried over into Zhou times. The Er ya records a custom to dismember a dog to "bring the four winds to a halt." (??). Other ceremonies involving dogs are mentioned in the Zhou li. In the nan (?) sacrifice to drive away pestilience, a dog was dismembered and his remains buried in front of the main gates of the capital. The ba (?) sacrifice to ward off evil required the Son of Heaven, riding in a jade chariot, to crush a dog under the wheels of his carriage. The character ba gives a clue as to how the ceremony took place. It is written with the radical for chariot (?) and a phonetic element which originally meant an animal whose legs had been bound (?). It was the duty of a specially appointed official to supply a dog of one colour and without blemishes f or the sacrifice. The blood of dogs were used for the swearing of covenants between nobles.
Towards the late fifth century BC, surrogates began to be used for sacrifice in lieu of real dogs. The Dao De Jing mentions the use of straw dogs as a metaphor:
Heaven and earth are ruthless, and treat the myriad creatures as straw dogs;the sage is ruthless, and treats the people as straw dogs.
However, the practice of burying actual dogs by no means died out. One Zhongshan royal mausoleum, for example, included two hunting dogs with gold and silver neck rings.
Later, clay figurines of dogs were buried in tombs. Large quantities of these sculptures have been unearthed from the Han dynasty onwards. Most show sickle-shaped tails not unlike the modern shiba inu or akita inu.
Dogs as food
Dogs, along with pigs, constituted the major source of animal protein in ancient China. "Dog butchers" (??) was a specific (and lowly-regarded) profession. They are called "idle and untrustworthy" by Fan Ye. Dog butchers who rose to prominence include the strongman Zhu Hai, the musician Gao Jianli, and courtier Fan Kuai (all circa third century BC).

from Gunpowder to Knitting Mills
In the early 19th Century Mr. Joesph Makens Merrow became interested in the manufacture of gunpowder and established a powder mill 24 miles from Hartford CT. When the Mill was destroyed by explosion in 1837 it was decided to build a knitting factory on the same site using water power from an asjacent river.
At first the knitted goods were made largely of native wool which was sorted, scoured and dyed, picked, carded and spun into yarn and knitted into hosiery. The product was sold through comission merchants in New York and delivered to retail stores throughout New England by two-horse wagons. Following the gold rush of 1849 shipments of goods began to sail to San Francisco. As the business increases a small machine shop was started to support the equipment in the factory.

In Conjunction with the knitting business, the first Crochet Machines were constructed for finishing around the tops of men's socks in place of handwork. The Merrow machine as it is now known, was an invention of Mr. Joseph M. Merrow, who was president of the company until his death in 1947 at age 98.
The Merrow Machines were constructed under his direction prior to 1876 with numerous patents granted. The machines were so useful that business was undertaken to introduce the equipment to other textile manufacturers. In 1887 the knitting mill was destroyed by fire and the company moved to Hartford and reorganized concentrating on the manufacture of overlock sewing machines.

In hartford the Company focused on building lines of industrial overlock sewing machines that were used to overedge fabric, add decorative edging and support the fabric processing trade by joining fabrics.
Between 1893 when the company was renamed the Merrow Machine Company, and 1932 when a line of 'A Class' machines was introduced, Merrow had a significant impact on the textile industry. The technology and rate of innovation in this time, spearheaded by Joseph M. Merrow was unequaled in the industry. As a consequence there were several high profile legal confrontations, including Merrow v. Wilcox & Gibbs in 1897.
Sales for overlock sewing machines were strong and Merrow grew to employ more than 500 people in Hartford Ct. The company also excelled developing international distribution and by 1905 had agents in 35 countries and printed manuals in at least 12 languages.
In the mid 1960s Merrow opened a manufacturing facility in Lavonia GA to reduce costs and maintain proximity to an American textile market that was moving from New York City to the American South East.
In the 1990s Merrow developed a new overlock machine called the Delta Class, but was never able to gain traction with the new model.
In 2004 shareholders of the Merrow Machine Co. agreed to a buyout of the company by Charlie Merrow, and it was renamed the Merrow Sewing Machine Company.

Nordyke Marmon & Company was a manufacturer of flour mills and located in Indianapolis, Indiana, United States.
The company began in 1851 as the Nordyke, Ham & Company started in the manufacture of milling machinery in a small shop in Richmond, Indiana. Previously, Ellis Nordyke, a prominent millwright, had been making hand made milling equipment himself in Richmond. Buhr stones from France were imported for grinding grains.
In 1858, Addison H. Nordyke and his father, Ellison, formed a partnership in to manufacture and build flour mills. The company was named E. & A. H. Nordyke with a small building just behind Ellis Nordyke's home serving as the first plant. This business continued until 1866 when Daniel W. Marmon joined the firm and the name changed to Nordyke Marmon & Company. Around 1870, Nordyke Marmon & Co. was a major concern in constructing mills. Amos K. Hallowell began with the company in 1875 and stayed through until 1895.
Addison H. Nordyke stayed with the company as an active official until 1899 and as a stockholder and director until 1904. Daniel W. Marmon continued his active official connection with the company until his death in 1909.
In 1875, Nordyke Marmon & Company moved to Indianapolis to obtain better manufacturing and shipping facilities. The "Quaker City Works", located in West Indianapolis adjoining the Indianapolis & Vincennes Railroad and Belt Railroads, was purchased in 1876. The firm grew in this location and became known as America's top mill builder.
The products of Nordyke Marmon exported machinery to Canada, Mexico, Central and South America furnishing complete machinery equipment for flour mills, corn mills, cereal mills, starch and rice mills and elevators. They made roller mills, bolting machines, packers, blending machinery, rice, corn and starch mill machinery and numerous special machines.
The Marmon sons now running Nordyke Marmon were dissatisfied with the automobiles of the late 1800s and early 1900s. In 1902 built a luxury car to satisfy their own demands. Howard Marmon went on to develop the Marmon Motor Car Company and build a high quality and dependable car.

Sodium phosphates are used as food additives. Sodium phosphates are added to many foods as an emulsifier to prevent oil separation. The line

The Steeple Grange is a 18in (457mm) narrow gauge line, built on the former Killer's Branch line from Steeple House Junction of the Cromford and High Peak Railway and Middleton Quarry in Derbyshire. The line features a steep 1:27 gradient incline from the back of the engine shed to half way up Killer's Branch. A crossover exists half way up the hill as well as sidings on the site of Dark Lane mine, soon to be the coaching stock shed.
Two serious extensions are being studied. The National Stone Centre has expressed wishes to see the light railway to build a line on the old track bed to its facilities, the railway also wishes to extended the incline to the level crossing next to Middleton Quarry.
Locomotives
The SGLR has two operational passenger locomotives, two permanent way/works locomotives and many others under restoration.
Greenbat
The railway's main locomotive is Greenbat, a 1.5 ton, 5HP "trammer" type battery locomotive built by Greenwood and Batley of Leeds. Greenbat incorporated a folding cab, to allow the locomotive to fit down small mineshafts. It was ordered by a steel mill, who specifically requested the cab be fixed. Greenbat herself has never been underground, working in various steel mills.
Greenbat was preserved by Adrian Booth, who passed it on to the SGLR when the line was in its infancy. She was fitted with air braking, and coupled to an ex-NCB manrider has provided nearly 15 years of service. In 2005 she received new batteries, the old ones having last 15 years out of a lifespan of 10.

ZM32 Horwich
This locomotive is the only 18in (457mm) gauge Ruston and Hornsby LAT in existence. She was bought by British railways to work at their Horwich works in Lancashire, and was preserved alongside Wren at the National Railway Museum. When she was sold off, she was going to be sent to a banana plantation in South America. However, she languished in Liverpool docks until bought for the Gloddfa Ganol Museum in Wales. Here, she was regauged to 2ft (610mm) and restored to working order. When Gloddfa Ganol closed, she was bought by an SGLR member, restored to 18in (457mm) gauge and fitted with airbraking.
A gearbox failure led to her being taken to Dorothea Restorations for a complete overhaul. She is now back on the line, in lined out BR green, and used alternately with Greenbat. She was recently voted the most popular non-steam narrow gauge locomotive[citation needed].

Hudson
This locomotive is quite an oddity, being home built. The SGLR was originally started with stock from Ladywash Mine, near Eyam in Derbyshire. The only locomotive was No.6, which was in a very poor, nonfunctioning state. Before Greenbat arrived, it was decided that one of the four wheel Ladywash Hudson manriders should be converted to a locomotive. This was done by Alwyn Ambrey in 1988, using a villiers engine and transmission from a cricket pitch roller. It resulted in being able to seat 2 passengers and the driver. Unfortunately, the drive was geared too highly for the engine to cope with the gradient on the line. This, and the engine being in poor state, meant it was used very little. The locomotive was worked on by various people in the late 1990s, finally being finished by J Scott in 2003. Scott refurbished the engine, thus solving a large amount of the underpowering problem, and fitted a much better braking system. Two years later, a new engine was found. It is basically the same as the old one, but has a 3:1 reduction gearbox fitted. Although there is still some tinkering to be done, this addition has greatly improved the locomotives haulage.

Claytons
The railway has three battery Claytons of similar designs in private ownership. L10 (works Order No. 5431 of January 1968) and L16 (W/O No. B0109B of March 1973, named Peggy) are 1 3/4 ton, 7HP low height locomotives. They were both bought directly from industrial use. Peggy has recently been restored to operating condition, and is running using the redundant 15-year old batteries from Greenbat. Peggy is fitted with a cam-contactor controller and resistances for speed control.

There are five basic types of construction used in building a wooden ship model hull:
Solid wood hull sawn and carved from a single block of wood.
Gluing together two thinner blocks of wood so that a block is formed with the seam vertical, so that the seam will show running down that surface of the block which is to be the deck. No advantage is gained by having the seam show along the sides of the hull.
Bread and Butter Cutting four or five thinner slabs of wood (the Bread) to be glued (the Butter) later into a laminated block. In this case, the slabs will be oriented so that they sit one on top of the other.
Plank on bulkhead, a technique in which a series of shaped bulkheads are placed along the keel to form a shaped stage which will be covered with planks to form the hull of the model.
Plank on frame In this technique, the model is built just as the full size wooden ship is constructed. The keel is laid down in a manner which keeps it straight and true.. The sternpost and stem are erected, deadwood and strengthening pieces inserted, and a series of shaped frames are built and erected along the keel to form the internal framework of the model. The planks are then applied over the frame to form the external covering.

Instead of using plans made specifically for models, many model shipwrights use the actual blueprints for the original vessel. One can take drawings for the original ship to a blueprint service and have them blown up, or reduced to bring them to the new scale. For instance, if the drawings are in 1/4" scale and you intend to build in 3/16", tell the service to reduce them 25%. You can use the conversion table below to determine the percentage of change. You can easily work directly from the original drawings however, by changing scale each time you make a measurement.
The equation for converting a measurement in one scale to that of another scale is D2 = D1 x F where:
D1 = Dimension in the "from-scale"
D2 = Dimension in the "to-scale"
F = Conversion factor between scales
Example: A yardarm is 6" long in 3/16" scale. Find its length in 1/8" scale.
F = .67 (from table)
D2 = 6" X .67 = 4.02 = 4"
It is easier to make measurements in the metric system and then multiply them by the scale conversion factor. Scales are expressed in fractional inches, but fractions themselves are harder to work with than metric measurements. For example, a hatch measures 1" wide on the draft. You are building in 3/16" scale. Measuring the hatch in metric, you measure 25 mm. T he conversion factor for 1/4" to 3/16', according to the conversion table is .75. So 25 mm x .75 = 18.75 mm, or about 19 mm. That is the hatch size in 3/16" scale.
Conversion is a fairly simple task once you start measuring in metric and converting according to the scale.
There is a simple conversion factor that allows you to determine the approximate size of a model by taking the actual measurements of the full-size ship and arriving at a scale factor. It is a rough way of deciding whether you want to build a model that is about two feet long, three feet long, or four feet long.
Here is a ship model conversion example using a real ship, the Hancock. This is a frigate appearing in Chappelle's "History of American Sailing Ships". In this example we want to estimate its size as a model. We find that the length is given at 136 ft 7 in, which rounds off to 137 feet.

Bumbershoot is an annual international music and arts festival held in Seattle, Washington. One of North America's largest such festivals, it takes place every Labor Day weekend at the 74-acre (299,000 m2) Seattle Center, which was built for the 1962 World's Fair. Seattle Center includes indoor theaters, outdoor stages, McCaw Hall, and Memorial Stadium. The name of the festival was taken from bumbershoot, a colloquial term for umbrella, probably coined in the 19th century as a portmanteau of umbrella and parachute.

The early years
Bumbershoot began as a city-funded ($25,000 budget) arts and music festival called "Mayor's Arts Festival", also known as "Festival '71", held at Seattle Center on August 13-15, 1971. This event had a total attendance of 125,000 visitors. Amidst the local economic depression triggered by the near collapse of Boeing, the festival attempted to revive local spirits, and was the largest event held in Seattle Center since the 1962 World's Fair. Liberal talk radio host Irving Clark Jr. chaired the fair committee, and avant-garde impressario Anne Focke used one-fifth of that for light shows (which incorporated lasers, still something of a novelty at that time), computer graphics, enormous inflatable soft sculptures by the Land Truth Company, and an electronic jam session. Other events included dance, theater, folk music, arts and crafts, art cars, body painting, a Miss Hot Pants Contest, amateur motorcycle races, and one out-of-town performer: country singer Sheb Wooley.
In 1972, "Festival '72", held on July 2123, took in 175,000 guests. In 1973 the festival adopted the present name "Bumbershoot", grew to five days, and pulled in 200,000 visitors. National acts included Cal Tjader, Joe Venuti, and John Handy. In 1974 it grew again, to 10 days and 325,000 visitors. The festival opened with a "Renaissance Processional" for the kilometer or so from downtown to the center; Mayor Wes Uhlman and most of the city council participated that year, in roles ranging from clowning to reading children's stories aloud to, in the mayor's case, running the Lost Child Center. Another prominent Bumbershoot event from this era was the Bumbernationals Artists' Soapbox Derby, which continued into the early 1980s.[citation needed] 1975's 11-day festival was produced by Parks Department employee John Chambless, a former University of Washington professor of history and philosophy who had produced the 1968 Sky River Festival, a Pacific Northwest hippie-era festival.< /br> The late-1970s retreat
With declining government grant support, Bumbershoot tried to keep afloat on donations and sales of posters, buttons, and T-shirts, but poor weather hurt attendance some years and left the free Festival scrambling for more financially stable options.
First, the festival retrenched on the number of days and on bringing in national talent. According to John Chambless, about 25 percent of the 1975 budget went to out-of-town talent; the 1976 festival was nearly 100 percent local and was cut to two weekends; in 1977, it was further cut to just Labor Day weekend; as it happened, in both 1977 and 1978, Labor Day weekend was rainy.
One Reel and AEG Take Over
In 1980 the city brought in Northwest non-profit organization One Reel to produce the event; they have been running it ever since. A mid-1980s attempt by Seattle Center itself to wrest back control was overruled by the City Council.
According to its website, One Reel originated as a traveling show, "The One Reel Vaudeville Show" in 1972 and was founded by current One Reel president and CEO Norman Langill. One Reel also operates Teatro Zinzanni, and the "Summer Nights concert series" and "Family 4th at Lake Union" events.
As the One Reel Vaudeville Show, they had been involved in the event since its second year, 1972, but with their new role as festival producer came big change. Once again, the festival featured headlining national and international talent (acts that year included Emmylou Harris, Chuck Berry, the Art Ensemble of Chicago, Etta James, Clifton Chenier, Eugene Fodor and Martin Mull), but added an admission charge. Simulcast is a portmanteau of "simultaneous broadcast", and refers to programs or events broadcast across more than one medium, or more than one service on the same medium, at the same time. For example, Virgin Radio is simulcast on both AM and on satellite radio, and the BBC's Prom concerts are often simulcast on both BBC Radio 3 and BBC Television. Another application is the transmission of the original-language soundtrack of movies or TV series over local or Internet radio, with the television broadcast having been dubbed into a local language.
Simulcasting to provide stereo sound for TV broadcasts
Before stereo TV sound transmission was possible, simulcasting on TV and Radio was a method of effectively transmitting "stereo" sound to music TV broadcasts. The first such transmission was in 1974, when the BBC broadcast a recording of Van Morrison's London Rainbow Concert simultaneously on BBC2 TV and Radio 2: see It's Too Late To Stop Now.
Similarly, in the 1980s, before Multichannel Television Sound, or home theater was commonplace in American households, broadcasters would air a high fidelity version of a television program's audio portion over FM stereo simultaneous with the television broadcast. PBS stations were the most likely, especially when airing a live concert. It was also a way of allowing MTV and similar music channels to run stereo sound through the cable-TV network. This method required a stereo FM transmitter modulating MTV's stereo soundtrack through the cable-TV network and customers connecting their FM receiver's antenna input to the cable-TV outlet. Then they would tune the FM receiver to the specified frequency that would be published in documentation supplied by the cable-TV provider.
The most notable application for simulcasting in this context was the Live Aid telethon concert that was broadcast around the world in July 13, 1985. Most destinations where this concert was broadcast had the concert simulcast by at least one TV network and at least one of the local FM stations.
Most stereo-capable video recorders made through the 1980s and early 1990s had a "simulcast" recording mode where they recorded video signals from the built-in TV tuner and audio signals from the VCR's audio line-in connectors. This was to allow one to connect a stereo FM tuner that is tuned to the simulcast frequency to the VCR's audio input in order to record the stereo sound of a TV program that would otherwise be recorded in mono. The function was primarily necessary with stereo VCRs that didn't have a stereo TV tuner or were operated in areas where stereo TV broadcasting wasn't in place. This was typically selected through the user setting the input selector to "Simulcast" or "Radio" mode or, in the case of some JVC units, the user setting another "audio input" switch from "TV" or "Tuner" to "Line".
Other uses
In America, simulcast most often refers to the practice of offering the same programming on an FM and AM station owned by the same entity, in order to cut costs. With the advent of solid state AM transmitters and computers, it has become very easy for AM stations to broadcast a different format without additional cost; therefore, simulcast between FM/AM combos is rarely heard today. Normally, AM stations broadcast some type of talk format; depending on the population, the format may be ethnic. During Afrikaner rule in South Africa, many programs were dubbed in Afrikaans. The English soundtrack was available on Radio 2000. This could be selected using a button labeled simulcast on many televisions manufactured before 1995.
Radio programs have been simulcast on television since the invention thereof; however, as of recent, perhaps the most visible example of radio shows on television is The Howard Stern Show, which currently airs on SIRIUS Satellite Radio as well as Howard TV. Another prominent radio show that is simulcast on television is Imus in the Morning, which airs on RFD-TV in addition to ABC Radio Networks.
In another case, popular programs will be aired simultaneously on different services in adjacent countries, such as The Simpsons, airing Sunday evenings at 8:00 p.m. (Eastern and Pacific times) on both Fox in the United States and Global in Canada. "Simulcast" is often a colloquial term for the related Canadian practice of simultaneous substitution (simsub).
In sports, simulcasts are when a single announcer broadcasts play-by-play coverage both over television and radio. The practice was common in the early years of television, but since the 1980s, most teams have used a separate team for television and for radio.

Army Airfield
The airfield was built in 1942/43 and opened in October 1943 as as Walnut Ridge Army Airfield and was used by the United States Army Air Forces as a training base during World War II. Walnut Ridge was commanded by the 324th Army Air Force Base Unit, being assiged to the AAF Southeast Training Center.
Designed for 5,114 military personnel, and 976 civilians, Walnut Ridge AAF had three (3) 5,000-foot runways, a huge apron covering over 63acres (250,000m2), 4 large hangars, base engineering building, and fully equipped 203 bed hospital. It also included, 131,151sqft (12,184.3m2). of office space, 119,613sqft (11,112.4m2). of enclosed storage space, 49,324sqft (4,582.3m2). shop space, a water plant and sewer plant designed to serve 5,000 troops, and a 10,000-man laundry, 2 theaters, a swimming pool, gymnasium, WAC housing, eight mess halls, dozens of enlisted-men's barracks, parachute loft, gas chamber, 260 tile-block apartments, motor pool, control tower, officers' club, link-trainer buildings, fire station, several warehouses, crash station, and 9.64miles (15.51km) of streets. Construction and land cost was almost ten and one-half million dollars.
The Air Field was activated on August 15, 1942, with the arrival of the initial contingent of key military personnel. Ten days later, 100 troops arrived, but there was no housing available on the air field, so these troops were transported to and from the CCC camp, located at five-mile (8 km) springs, north of Pocahontas for the first 30 days.
Even though the airfield was planned and designed as an Army Airfield, for some time it appeared it would instead become an Advanced Glider School. As late as September 1942, preparations were being made for gliders, including requests for instructional materials, gliders and tow planes.
Meanwhile the first 3 classes of Aviation Cadets programmed for Walnut Ridge were sent to Blytheville, which was being built as an Advanced Twin Engine School. Blytheville was scarcely any better prepared than Walnut Ridge. Circus tents were utilized for operations headquarters and classrooms. The runways were not ready, so flying was done from oil-coated dirt strips.
Finally, near the end of September the Southeast Training Command at Maxwell Field clarified the situation concerning the Air Field's mission by announcing 102 Aviation Cadets and 3 Student Officers from Decatur, Alabama, and 20 Aviation Cadets from Camden, Arkansas, would be sent to Walnut Ridge for Basic Flight Training. For reasons unknown, the Advanced Glider School was established at Stuttgart, which was being built as an Advanced Twin-Engine School.
During the eleven month period from November 1, 1942, thru September 30, 1943, the training hours flown at Walnut Ridge were 160,648. The average for all Basic Flying Schools in the Southeast Training Command was 129,474. Walnut Ridge had .49 accidents per 1000 hours versus .57 accidents per 1000 hours average for all schools; however, the fatal accident rate at Walnut Ridge was higher, .087 per 1000 hours versus a .052 average. The hours flown at Walnut Ridge through June 30, 1944, totaled 414,429.
Walnut Ridge was also a major maintenance facility, servicing C-47s, P-40s, P-51s, B-17s and B-29s.

Early life
Hettigoda, Chairman of Hettigoda Group of Companies, was born at Kananke, Matara in 1937 to a family of resounding standing, reputation and admiration. Victor was the fifth of a family of nine children. He received his education at Rahula College, Matara. On leaving school, he joined his father as a 'helper student' in pursuit of the ancestral noble profession of Ayurveda Medicine. It took him nearly 12 years to learn the art of Ayurveda Medicine. He spent many late nights burning the mid-night oil, engrossed in the "Ola Leaf" Manuscripts and books on Ayurveda.
Victor is married to a school teacher and has two daughters and a son. The children also involved in his businesses.

Moreover, Hettigoda is also one of the main founders of the wonder balm, Siddhalepa. The secret formula, which has been guarded for more than 200 years was disclosed to him by his father, and after working hard to promote the product, is now recognized worldwide as a leader in "Veda Beheth" (Sinhala for herbal based medicine).

Presidential election 2005
Hettigoda, one of 13 candidates in a packed field that includes current Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapakse and former Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe, told Sri Lankan newspaper The Island that if elected, he would use his vast fortune to buy a cow for every home in the country. He said that the cows would be used to fight off malnutrition, suggesting that any excess milk, cheese or butter could be exported.

Mars bar (UK style)
The Mars Bar is a chocolate bar manufactured by Mars Incorporated. It was first manufactured in Slough in the United Kingdom in 1932 as a sweeter version of the American Milky Way bar which Mars, Inc. produced in the USA (not to be confused with the European version of the Milky Way, which is a different confection). A different chocolate bar with the same name was sold in the USA until 2002. It contained plain nougat, almonds, caramel and milk chocolate.

International variations
Chocolate bars sold as the Mars Bar vary in different regions of the world. The American version (discontinued in 2000) is no longer sold, and has been replaced with the slightly different Snickers Almond. The European version of the Mars bar is sold in some United States grocery stores, usually being found in the imported or ethnic food sections.
UK Mars Bar
In 1932, Forrest Mars, estranged son of American candy maker Frank Mars, rented a factory in Slough and with a staff of twelve people began manufacturing a kind of chocolate bar that had not been seen before in the UK. At that time most chocolate was simply a solid block, whereas the Mars Bar consisted of nougat and caramel covered in milk chocolate. It was modelled after his father's Milky Way bar, which was already popular in the US. Today the basic recipe is unaltered but the size of the bar and the proportions of the main components have changed over the years.
In 2002, the UK Mars Bar was reformulated and repackaged. The nougat was made lighter, the chocolate on top became noticeably thinner, and the overall weight of the bar was reduced slightly. The packaging was also redesigned with a less-bold and more cursive logo.
Additionally, the famous slogan "A Mars a day helps you work, rest and play" was also replaced with "Pleasure you can't measure". This re-branding was to appeal to a more feminine, youthful market. Various sizes are made: miniature bars called "FUN SIZE" (19.7 gram); "Snack Time" (36.5 gram) which is sold in multiple packs; a larger multi-pack size of 54 gram, the regular sized single 62.5 gram bar (which seems to have again been stealthily reduced in size to 58 gram, without any price drop. Jan 2009); and a "Kingsize" 84 gram bar which has since been replaced by "Mars Duo" (91 gram) this is a pack that contains 2 smaller bars instead of 1 large one. The regular 62.5 gram single bar contains 284 calories. (Now 58 gram containing 259 calories.)
In the UK, most Mars Bars are still made at the Slough Trading Estate.
Canada
Since the summer of 2006, all Mars Bars produced in Canada are peanut-free. Mars is one of the few chocolate bars in North America for which no size of the product has any trace of peanuts. In February 2008, Mars Canada introduced a new variety of Mars bar called "Mars Caramel" to compete with the Cadbury Caramilk and Nestle Aero Caramel bars.

The Iron Ring is a symbolic ring worn by many Canadian engineers. Obtaining the ring is an optional endeavour the ring is not a prerequisite for practicing professional engineering in Canada.
The Ring is given as part of "The Ritual of the Calling of an Engineer" , written by Rudyard Kipling. Many believe that the rings are made from the steel of a beam from the Quebec Bridge, which collapsed during construction in 1907, killing 75 construction workers, due to poor planning and design by the overseeing engineers; however, this is not the case. This misunderstanding may have its roots in a common practice of attaching a symbol of an engineering failure, such as a bolt from that bridge, to the chain that is held by participants in the ritual. The Ring is a symbol of both pride and humility for the engineering profession.
The Ring is worn on the little finger of the working hand, where the facets act as a sharp reminder of obligation while the engineer works. This is particularly true of recently obligated engineers, whose rings still bear facets nearly sharp enough to be considered serrations.
The Iron Ring was originally made from iron, but graduating engineering students are now usually given stainless steel rings, which do not rust. Only Camp 1 (which includes the University of Toronto, Ryerson University, York University and the UOIT) continues to provide the option of iron. Protocol dictates that the rings should be returned by retired engineers or by the families of deceased engineers. Some camps offer such iron rings or so obligated "experienced" rings, but they are now rare due to both medical and practical (industrial/construction site) complications.
The Ring itself is small and understated, designed as a constant reminder rather than a piece of jewellery. The Rings were originally hammered manually with a rough outer surface to further dispel the notion of them being worn as a trinket. The modern machined ring design emulates this manual process with a unique pattern. Twelve half-circle facets are carved into the top and bottom of the outer surface, with the two halves offset by one facet radius. To an untrained eye this appears to be manually hammered.

The Ritual of the Calling of an Engineer is the ceremony where Iron Rings are given to graduating engineers who choose to obligate themselves to the highest professionalism and humility of their profession. It is a symbol that reflects the moral, ethical and professional commitment made by the engineer who wears the ring. The ceremonies are private affairs with no publicity. Invitations to attend are extended to local engineering alumni and professional engineers by those who are scheduled to participate. For some schools, the invitation to witness the ceremony is open to anyone in the engineering profession, and non-obligated engineers may not participate in the ritual. For other schools, the invitation to witness the ceremony is open to everyone. Some graduating engineers choose to receive a ring passed on from a relative or mentor, giving the ceremony a personal touch.
Although the details of the ceremony are not secret, they are considered sacrosanct and obligated engineers normally do not discuss the ceremony, even with engineering students.
The word "camp" is used to describe these regional organizations because it conveys a smaller, close-knit sense of community.

Cycle three of Australia's Next Top Model premiered on 27 March 2007 and concluded on 5 June 2007. As with the first two cycles, the third season was broadcast exclusively on the Foxtel network FOX8 in Australia. Alice Burdeu was declared the winner with Stephanie Hart being the runner-up.
Erika Heynatz, the previous host for the first two cycles did not return as host of cycle 3, with Jodhi Meares, former model and designer of swimsuit collection Tigerlily, taking on the hosting role.
The judging panel saw the return of fashion designer and model booker, Alex Perry for his third season. As well as international photographer Jez Smith, and ex-model and TV personality Charlotte Dawson.
The show went under a number of changes with the introduction of a fan favourite voting system. Shortly after a new episode aired, Foxtel users were able to cast their vote via the Red Button or SMS for who they thought was "Australia's Favourite Top Model", in which Jordan Loukas was announced the winner of during the finale, which was broadcast live for the first time in the series, where as in previous cycles the finale would be filmed at an isolated location and the winner revealed later on TV.
Furthermore, for the first time for Top Model franchise, viewers were able to have a say in who won the overall prize of "Australia's Next Top Model" by phoning in or using SMS to vote for either Alice or Stephanie H. during the lead-up week to the finale. The viewers vote counted for 15% of the total vote to determine the winner while the other 85% was determined from eight judges including representatives from Australian Vogue, Priscilla's Modeling Agency and Napoleon Perdis Make-Up Academy.

The 12 selected girls from around Australia gather inside a small room where they meet Jodhi who brings out Jonathan Pease, a fashion stylist. The girls are told that there are four rooms in this place and the girls have three minutes in each room to perform a photograph. The first one is street wear followed by clean swim-wear shots and last of all is the elegant shoot. The judges secretly monitor them and give them a shock when the girls are told to walk down a runway in front of the judges. At the end of the runway the girls are critiqued. Afterwards the girls are given keys to their new apartment where the girls find Jodhi mail telling them to get ready to perform the Top Model commercial the next day. Meanwhile Paloma starts to get annoyed with all the girls and says she acts older than her age which is sixteen but behaves like a fourteen year old. Jaimi also considers leaving. The next day the girls are given a job which they have to portray in promoting the show. Anika is told that she was the best at acting and playing her role so she gets to choose two friends to take along to meet Jodhi and have a special time with her. Meanwhile at the house Paloma has an anxiety attack. The next day the girls are taken to their first real photoshoot where they have to pose in a group shot with elegant dresses on. At judging Stephanie. H, Anika , Alice and Jordan are given praise but Stephanie. F, Cassandra and Jane are given a bad critique. Jaimi is still considering leaving and leaves in the judging room, shocking all the girls again. Cobi and Stephanie. F surprisingly land in the bottom 2 with Cobi leaving. And another surprise shocks the girls when new girl Kara arrives to take over Jaimi's place.

ANNIE'S ROOM (or ANNIE'S HOUSE)
The number 1.
ARROWS
Another term for darts.
ARCHER
Refers to a player who throws very quick smooth darts, like an archer's arrow (also known as a 'Derek'). Contrast "FLOATER".
Average
Average score achieved every three darts thrown.
B
BABY TON
A score of 95, usually by scoring five 19s.
BAG O' NUTS (OR CARBONEAR)
A score of 45.
BARREL
The part of a dart you grip, right behind the point.
BASEMENT
The double-3.
BOUNCE OUT
When a dart hits a wire on the board flush-on and bounces back off the board. Can be potentially dangerous to spectators who are too close.
BREAKFAST (or BED 'N' BREAKFAST)
A score of 26, made up of a single-5, single-20, single-1 in a game of x01. This is a common score in darts because players aiming for the 20 sector (which contains the highest scoring area on the board) will often accidentally hit the 1 and the 5 sectors, which are located on either side of the 20. The term comes from the typical price of a bed-and-breakfast in times gone by: 2 shillings and sixpence, or "two and six". (See also "CHIPS")
BUCKET/BAG OF NAILS
Landing all three darts in the 1s. This is also known as "The Eric Bristow", who once scored three 1s in televised tournament.
BUCKSHOT
A throw when darts land wildly all over the board.
BULL-OFF
See DIDDLE FOR THE MIDDLE.
BULLSEYE (or BULL)
The center of the board. (see also: "SINGLE-BULL" and "DOUBLE-BULL")
BUNTING (as in "To Bunt)
The art of throwing on your knees.
BUST
Hitting more than you needed in an x01 game. The darts do not count and the player begins his next turn on the same score he had prior to.

C
In a Cricket game this refers to high scores base on the number of darts scored. For example a triple-20, single-20, single-20 would be called a C-5 because "5 darts" were scored with three darts.
CARPENTRY DARTS
Darts thrown such that they miss the board entirely and hit a wooden frame which is holding the board to the wall. (See also: "MASONRY DARTS")
CHAMPAGNE BREAKFAST
Hitting treble 20, treble 1 and treble 5 in three darts (see "BREAKFAST")
CHIPS (OR FISH AND CHIPS)
A score of 26. (See also: "BREAKFAST")
CHUCKER
A player who just "chucks" the darts at the board, doesn't aim or care.
CIRCLE IT
When a player scores a single digit (less than 10) with three darts, his team-mates would shout out "Circle it!" to the scorekeeper to highlight the terrible throw. A variation on this tradition is to draw a fish around the score, often leading to aquarium-related jokes being aimed at particularly poor or unlucky players. (See also: "FISH")
CLOCK
The dartboard itself, usually in the context of "ROUND THE CLOCK".
CORK
The center of the board. This comes from the cork in the end of a keg where it is tapped. The ends of kegs were used for targets in the game's early days.
COVER
A term frequently used by Sid Wadell, meaning aiming for treble 19.

DADDY'S BED/DADDY'S/DADDY

DAIRYLEA DARTS
A throw that is 'spread' around the board, named after the cheese spread Dairylea.
DEVIL
The treble-6, so called due to '666', and the fact that it is often hit in error when going for treble-13 or treble-10.
DESTINY BULL
When it is inevitible that bull will be hit. For the whole day after whoever achieves this must be referred to as 'bull'.
DIDDLE FOR THE MIDDLE
A throw to see who gets one dart closer to the bullseye to determine who throws first in the game. Also known as a "BULL OFF", "MIDDLE FOR MIDDLE" and "OUT FOR BULL".
DOUBLE
The thin outer ring of the board. In standard x01 games, a double counts for two times the number hit.
DOUBLE-BULL
On dartboards configured with a bullseye consisting of two concentric circles, the outer circle is commonly green and worth 25 and the inner circle is commonly red and worth 50 points. Hitting the innermost ring of this type of bullseye is a "DOUBLE-BULL". (See also: "BULLSEYE")
DOUBLE IN
A variant of x01 in which a double is needed to start the game.
DOUBLE TOP
The double-20.
DOUBLE TROUBLE
Not being able to hit the double needed to win the game.
DOWNSTAIRS
The lower portion of the board, usually in reference to the 19s in a game of x01.

History and Format
The Wonder Pets television series was created by Josh Selig for Little Airplane Productions. The show was first seen as a short Nick Jr.'s film series called The New Adventures of Linny the Guinea Pig, in which a guinea pig named Linny traveled into space and under the ocean. Ming-Ming Duckling and Turtle Tuck were created when the show was expanded and called The Super Singing Power Pets!. The title was later shortened to Wonder Pets. The show's main characters are three elementary school classroom pets Linny the Guinea Pig, Turtle Tuck, and Ming-Ming Duckling. They are presented as a trio of heroes who rescue baby animals as they demonstrate the benefits of teamwork.
The animation style used to create Wonder Pets! is called "photo-puppetry", and was created for the series to allow animators to manipulate photographs of real animals. It also uses drawn objects (not characters), so the total presentation could be considered animated mixed-media.
A good deal of the dialog is sung, so the show has been likened to operetta or singspiel. A 10-member live orchestra performs each episode, sometimes including other instrumentalists skilled in music from the region to which the pets are traveling during the episode. Completing each episode takes 33 weeks from script to final delivery.
Preceding each show is a disclaimer indicating the show develops vocabulary and the concept of teamwork in pre-schoolers.
Characters and voice cast
Linny the Guinea Pig, age 5, is the leader of the Wonder Pets. Linny is voiced by Sofie Zamchick in the United States version and Isabella Moylan in the UK version. As a superhero, she wears a yellow cap and a blue cape. Linny appears to be the most educated of the group, often providing different zoological and geographical information to the others. She is usually the one to remind the group about teamwork or other values and offer praise such as "Good eye, Tuck". She leads Ming-Ming and Tuck in most of the show's primary songs and usually has the responsibility of starting the "Flyboat". Linny's catch phrase is "This calls for some celery!", usually uttered at the conclusion of each adventure. Before Wonder Pets, Linny starred in a few three-minute shorts on Nick, Jr. titled Linny the Guinea Pig, where Linny would explore different environments such as the ocean and outer space.
Turtle Tuck (who is actually a terrapin and more specifically a Red Eared Slider) age 4, is a down-to-earth turtle who sometimes disagrees with Ming-Ming. As a superhero, he wears a white French sailor's cap, blue Aquasocks, and a red cape. Tuck is voiced by Teala Dunn in the United States version (Callum Hanks in the UK Version). Tuck is arguably the most empathetic of the trio, often desiring to give the rescued animals a hug or keeping them company while Linny and Ming-Ming put their rescue plan into action. He also has keen observational skills, spotting things from a distance, which often garners him the compliment, "Good eye, Tuck!".
Ming-Ming Duckling, age 3, is an overconfident young duckling. As a superhero, she wears a leather pilot's helmet, goggles, and a green cape. Unlike the other Wonder Pets, she has the ability to fly. She can also speak "bird", allowing her to talk to other birds that the Wonder Pets encounter. Ming-Ming also believes that her great-grandfather was an eagle. Ming-Ming sometimes tries to take on big problems by herself and in one episode ("Save the Duckling") she even becomes the animal that needed rescuing. Ming-Ming often provides comic relief in the show. In the episode, "Save the Mouse!", Tuck and Ming-Ming bump into a cuckoo clock, resulting in the cuckoo popping out. Ming-Ming then asks the cuckoo, "No, excuse me. Do you have a cousin named Pablo?", referring to Pablo the penguin in The Backyardigans.
